Story Characters: Your Child Becomes the Hero

Story Characters let your child step into the stories themselves. Upload a photo, create a character profile, and watch your child become the hero of every adventure: exploring magical worlds, solving mysteries, learning life lessons as the star of their own story.

What Are Story Characters?

A Story Character is a reusable profile that StoryBee remembers across all your story generations. Instead of describing a hero each time, you create a character once and use it in every story.

Each character profile includes:

  • Photo. A clear image of your child that the AI uses to generate consistent illustrations.
  • Name. Your child's name, or a hero name they love.
  • Age group. Ensures age-appropriate story content.
  • Interests and personality traits. Hobbies, favorite things, what makes them unique.
  • Appearance details. Hair color, clothing style, distinguishing features.

What Makes Story Characters Different

A regular story prompt asks the AI to invent a hero from scratch. A Story Character tells the AI: this specific child is the hero. The AI uses the uploaded photo and profile details to create illustrations that reflect the child's actual appearance, making each story feel personal and immersive.

How to Create a Story Character

Step 1: Navigate to the Avatar Section

Log into your StoryBee account and click on your profile icon in the top-right corner. Select Story Characters from the dropdown menu. (Or visit the avatars section directly from your dashboard.)

Step 2: Upload a Photo

Choose a clear, well-lit photo of your child's face. For best results:

  • Use a front-facing portrait with the face centered
  • Ensure good lighting (natural daylight works best)
  • Avoid sunglasses, masks, or heavy filters
  • Keep the background simple and uncluttered
  • Use a recent photo that reflects their current look

Step 3: Fill in Character Details

Add the information that makes your child's character unique:

  • Character name (can be their real name or a special story name)
  • Age (affects story complexity and vocabulary)
  • Hair color and style (for illustration consistency)
  • Favorite activities (the AI weaves these into adventures)
  • Personality traits (brave, curious, kind, funny, adventurous)
  • Special talents or interests (what makes them unique)

Step 4: Save Your Character

Review the details, make any adjustments, and click Save Character. Your child's hero profile is now ready for adventure.

Using Characters in Stories

Selecting a Character

When generating a new story, you'll see your saved characters in the story creation panel. Click on a character to select them as the hero. You can also switch characters between stories.

Character-Specific Prompts

Once you've selected a character, write your prompt with them in mind:

"Luna explores a hidden library beneath the school where books come to life and characters need help finding their way back into their stories"

The AI automatically uses your child's appearance, name, and traits when generating the story and illustrations.

Mixing Characters in Stories

Have multiple children? Create separate characters and reference them together in a single prompt:

"Luna and her brother Max team up to solve the mystery of the missing moon crystals"

⚠️ Note: Each child needs their own character profile. The AI can incorporate multiple characters in a single story when referenced in the prompt.

Managing Character Profiles

Editing a Character

Return to the Story Characters section anytime to:

  • Update their photo (as they grow)
  • Change their name for a new adventure
  • Add new interests or personality traits
  • Adjust age group settings

Deleting a Character

If you no longer need a character profile, you can delete it from the management screen. This won't affect previously generated stories.

Creating Multiple Characters

You can create different characters for different purposes:

  • A fantasy version with magical traits
  • A real-world version based on actual appearance
  • Different characters for different children
  • Seasonal or themed variations

Best Practices

Getting the Best Illustrations

  • Use high-quality, well-lit photos
  • Keep hairstyle descriptions current
  • Update photos as children grow
  • Include distinguishing features (glasses, freckles, etc.)

Age-Appropriate Adventures

Match the story complexity to the character's age group for the best experience. A 10-year-old's mystery adventure will be very different from a 4-year-old's bedtime story.

Making Stories Personal

The magic of Story Characters comes from personalization. Include your child's real interests, favorite foods, beloved toys, and actual friends in story prompts for an extra-special experience.

Privacy and Safety

StoryBee takes privacy seriously:

  • Character photos and data are encrypted
  • You control when characters are used
  • Delete character data anytime
  • No sharing of character information without consent
  • Age-appropriate content filters always active

💡 Tip: Create a new character profile for special occasions — a birthday character, a holiday character, or a "superhero version" of your child for extra fun.
