The Disappearance
Ten-year-old Leo, a small boy with bright, curious eyes and a shock of unruly brown hair, loved mysteries. He wore a bright yellow raincoat, despite the sunny day, and carried a magnifying glass – his prized possession. He discovered the crime scene: the kitchen of his grandmother's lakeside cottage, a charming place with wide windows overlooking a tranquil lake dotted with lily pads. The meticulously decorated birthday cake, intended for his grandmother’s 70th birthday, was gone! Only a single, slightly muddied frog footprint remained on the countertop. Grandma, a cheerful woman with rosy cheeks and twinkling eyes, was distraught. "It was the most perfect cake, Leo! My special raspberry recipe!"
The Suspects
Leo’s first suspect was Pippin, Grandma's mischievous ginger cat. Pippin, known for his love of cream and cake, had been acting suspiciously. But Leo found no cake crumbs on Pippin’s fur or around his usual sleeping spots. Next, he questioned Reggie, Grandma's clumsy but lovable golden retriever. Reggie, known for his occasional ‘accidental’ spills, showed no signs of cake consumption, though a small smear of raspberry jam was found on his nose. 'Reggie, I'm afraid you're going to have to show me your paws' said Leo. This lead was a dead-end, too.
The Lilypad Clue
Leo remembered the muddied frog footprint. He grabbed his magnifying glass and examined the print meticulously. The mud was unusual; it seemed to contain tiny, glittering particles. Following the trail, he noted the pattern of the footprints to the lake. He noticed the glittering particles were remarkably like the sprinkles used to decorate the cake. Leo reasoned that the thieving culprit must have crossed from shore to lilypad.
The Investigation on the Water
Leo carefully waded into the shallows, his yellow raincoat protecting him. He followed the footprint trail across the lily pads, each step leaving a slight ripple on the water’s surface. He found a partially eaten piece of cake on a large lily pad with a clear frog bite mark. This confirmed his suspicion. But where was the rest of the cake?
