Lina, with her long brown hair and sparkling brown eyes, loved to dance. She wore her favorite pink t-shirt and blue jean shorts every day, even when she wasn't dancing. "Twirl, twirl, twirl!" she would hum, spinning around her living room until she felt dizzy with joy. Her best friend, Derisn, always giggled when Lina did this. Derisn had long, light-colored hair that bounced when she laughed, and warm brown eyes just like Lina's. She loved her Minnie Mouse t-shirt and jean skirt, and she loved to dance almost as much as Lina. "Faster, Lina, faster!" Derisn would cheer, flapping her hands like little bird wings.
Then there was Talya. Talya had neat brown hair and serious brown eyes. She wore a black overall and liked everything to be just right. When Lina and Derisn would twirl and giggle, Talya would stand straight and practice her ballet positions. "First position, second position," she would whisper to herself, making sure her feet were perfectly placed. All three girls were six years old, and all three were ballerinas, even though they were still learning at Mrs. Flutterwing's Dance Studio.
One sunny morning, Mrs. Flutterwing, a lady with a giggle that sounded like wind chimes, announced, "Girls, we have a very special performance next week! The Summer Sparkle Show!" Lina’s eyes grew wide like saucers. Derisn clapped her hands with a happy squeal. Talya’s serious eyes even sparkled a little.
"For this show," Mrs. Flutterwing continued, "you will need your brand-new, sparkly ballet shoes!" She opened a big, shimmering box. Inside, oh my! There were three pairs of the most beautiful ballet shoes Lina had ever seen. They were pink, and they sparkled like a field full of tiny diamonds. They even had little silver ribbons!
Lina reached for a pair. "Mine!" she squeaked. Derisn already had her little hands on another pair. "These are for me!" she declared. Talya, ever so carefully, picked up the last pair. "Perfect fit, I hope," she murmured.
That afternoon, the girls went home, each clutching their sparkly shoes. Lina couldn't wait to try hers on. She sat on her bed, her pink t-shirt rumpled from all the excitement. She wiggled her toes into the soft, pink satin. Oh, they felt wonderful! She tied the silver ribbons in a neat bow. “Plié, plié!” she whispered, bending her knees. “Relevé!” she rose onto her tiptoes. She felt like a real ballerina, ready for the big show. She slipped them off and put them carefully on her bedside table, dreaming of sparkles.
Derisn, on the other hand, was a bit more… adventurous. She put on her sparkly shoes and immediately started dancing around her room. “Look at me! I’m a dancing star!” she shouted to her teddy bear. She spun and skipped, and even tried a little jump. “Boing! Boing!” went her tiny feet. The shoes felt so light! She danced so much that her hair went even bouncier. When her mom called her for dinner, Derisn quickly took off the shoes and shoved them under her bed, thinking she would just put them back on right after.
Talya, methodical as always, put on her shoes, made sure they fit perfectly, and stood in front of her mirror. She practiced all her positions, very slowly and precisely. “Point, flex, stretch,” she instructed herself. She admired how the sparkles shimmered with every tiny movement. After her practice, she took them off, polished them with a soft cloth, and placed them carefully inside their shiny box, tucking the box safely on her shelf.

Days passed, and the Summer Sparkle Show was getting closer. The girls practiced a special dance Mrs. Flutterwing had taught them. It had twists and turns, and lots of tippy-toe steps. They were almost ready!
Then, the morning before the show, something terrible happened. Lina woke up, eager to put on her sparkly shoes for one last practice. She looked at her bedside table. Gone! Her shoes were gone! Her heart went “thump-thump-thump” like a scared little rabbit. “Mama! My shoes!” she cried, her brown eyes filling with tears.
At the same time, Derisn was rummaging under her bed. She pulled out toys, books, even a rogue sock. No sparkly shoes! “Where did they go?” she mumbled, her long, light hair getting even messier as she frantically searched. She even peeked under her pillow, just in case.
Talya, meanwhile, opened her shiny box. Her shoes were there, sparkling just as she’d left them. She felt a tiny pang of worry for her friends. "Oh dear," she whispered, her brow furrowing.
Lina called Derisn. “My shoes are gone!” she sniffled. Derisn replied, “Mine too! I can’t find them anywhere!” They agreed to meet at Lina’s house, feeling very, very sad. Talya heard the news and hurried over too, carrying her perfect, sparkly shoes.
“We can’t dance without our sparkly shoes!” wailed Lina, wiping a tear from her cheek. Derisn nodded, her lips trembling. Talya, practical as always, said, “Let’s think. Where did you last see them?”
Lina remembered putting hers on her bedside table. “But they just vanished!” she insisted. Derisn remembered shoving hers under the bed. “They must have wiggled away!” she added, making a funny little wiggling motion with her hands. Talya frowned. “Shoes don’t wiggle away. And they don’t vanish. Not usually.”
They started searching Lina’s room first. They looked under the bed, in the closet, behind the curtains. Lina’s pink t-shirt got a little wrinklier with each search. “Maybe… maybe a mischievous mouse took them?” suggested Derisn, eyes wide. Talya shook her head. “Mice don’t like ballet shoes.”
They even looked under Lina’s blue jean shorts, which were neatly folded on a chair. Nothing! Lina let out a big sigh. “This is no fun.”
Next, they went to Derisn’s house. Her room was a whirlwind of toys and clothes. They dug through her toy box, peered into her dresser drawers, and even checked inside her dollhouse mansion. Derisn’s Minnie Mouse t-shirt was getting quite dusty from all the searching. “Maybe they flew out the window?” she wondered, looking up at the sky. Talya, ever practical, pointed out, “Ballet shoes don’t have wings.”
They searched and searched. They lifted blankets, looked behind books. They even asked Derisn’s fluffy cat, Mittens, who just blinked at them sleepily. “Meeoow,” Mittens said, as if to say, “Nope, haven’t seen any sparkly shoes.”
The girls sat on Derisn’s carpet, feeling very discouraged. Lina's brown eyes were droopy. Derisn’s bouncy hair seemed less bouncy. Talya, for the first time, looked a little lost. “What if we can’t find them before the show?” Lina whispered.
Suddenly, Talya’s eyes lit up. “Wait! When we got the shoes, what did Mrs. Flutterwing say about them?”
Derisn remembered. “She said they were… sparkly!”
Lina added, “And brand-new!”
“Yes, but what else?” Talya prompted, tapping her chin. “She said they were… special. And soft.”
“Oh!” Lina gasped. “She said they needed to be kept safe!”
“And dry!” Derisn piped up.
Talya then looked at Derisn’s messy room, then at Lina’s slightly less messy, but still cluttered, room. She remembered her own careful steps. “Remember the boxes?” she asked. “The shiny boxes they came in?”
Lina thought back. She had just left hers on her bedside table. Derisn had shoved hers under the bed. “My box!” Lina exclaimed. She ran back to her room. And there it was, tucked behind a stack of books on her bedside table, almost hidden. She had been so excited, she had simply forgotten where she’d put the empty box. She looked inside. Nothing.
Then, she remembered something else. Her little sister, Pip, who loved to play dress-up. Pip loved shiny things. Pip especially loved to play princess. Lina tiptoed to Pip’s room. There, in Pip’s toy chest, under a pile of glittery scarves and a plastic crown, were her sparkly ballet shoes! Pip had probably come in, seen the sparkly shoes, and thought they were perfect for her princess game. Lina gently took them out. They were a little squished, but still sparkling. “Whew!” she sighed, holding them close.
Derisn, listening to Talya, also ran back to her room. “The box! The box!” she repeated. She looked under her bed again, but this time, very carefully. And there it was, pushed way, way to the back, her shiny box. She pulled it out. And next to it, tangled in a pile with her favorite fuzzy unicorn and a few unmatched socks, were her very own sparkly ballet shoes! They were a bit dusty, but intact. Derisn carefully dusted them off. “Oh, my wiggling wonder shoes!” she cheered.
The girls met back at Lina’s house, relieved and laughing. Lina was holding her slightly squished shoes. Derisn was holding her dusty shoes. Talya held her perfectly clean ones. They sat down, their pink t-shirt, Minnie Mouse t-shirt, and black overall bobbing with a shared sense of accomplishment.
“My shoes were playing dress-up with Pip!” Lina giggled. Derisn added, “Mine were on an adventure with my unicorn!” Talya just smiled. “Mine were safe in their box.”
They realized that even though they were all very good ballerinas, they had different ways of taking care of their things. Lina learned that leaving things out could sometimes mean they went on unannounced adventures. Derisn learned that putting things away neatly meant they were easier to find. And Talya, well, Talya learned that sometimes, even when you do everything right, your friends might need a little help and a big dose of understanding.
That night, all three girls put their sparkly ballet shoes away carefully. Lina placed hers back on her bedside table, but this time, she put them inside their shiny box. Derisn put hers on her shelf, right next to Talya’s, also in their box. They understood that special things, like sparkly ballet shoes and friendship, needed to be treated with care. The next day, at the Summer Sparkle Show, they danced their beautiful ballet, their sparkly shoes flashing under the lights, each step a testament to their friendship and a little lesson learned. And Mrs. Flutterwing, with her wind-chime giggle, clapped the loudest of all.
