Harry the Hippo was a happy hippo, usually. He loved splashing in the muddy river, munching on juicy water plants, and singing silly songs with his friends, the monkeys. But today, Harry wasn't so happy. He was… HUNGRY! And when Harry was hungry, he got… GRUMPY!
"ROAR!" Harry bellowed. "I want food! NOW!"
His best friend, Millie the Monkey, scampered down from a tree, her tail twitching nervously. "Harry, what's wrong? You sound like a thunderstorm!"
"I'm HUNGRY, Millie!" Harry stomped his big feet, making little splashes of mud go everywhere. "And when I'm hungry, I get… ANGRY!"
Millie knew all about Harry's hungry howls. They were loud and a little scary. She scratched her head, trying to think of a way to help. "Hmm… I know! Let's find some yummy plants for you to eat! How about some sweet river reeds?"
Harry shook his head. "River reeds are BORING! I want… something special!"
Millie puffed out her cheeks. This was a problem. She needed to think like a scientist! (Science!)
"Okay, Harry," she said, trying to keep her voice calm. "Let's investigate. What kind of plants do you REALLY like? Let's make a list!"
Millie pulled out a big leaf and a stick of charcoal (which she'd cleverly saved from a campfire – Engineering!). On the leaf, she drew a picture of a bright red berry. "Berries?"
Harry's ears perked up. "Yes! Berries are yummy! But… there aren't any berries growing near the river right now."
"Hmm…" Millie drew a picture of a juicy green melon. "Melon?"
"Melon is good!" Harry agreed. "But the farmer keeps all the melons in his garden, and he shouts if we try to take them!"
Millie sighed. This was harder than she thought. She needed a plan, a design! (Design Thinking and Engineering!)
Suddenly, Freddie the Frog hopped over. "Ribbit! I heard someone shouting! Is everything okay?"
"Harry's hungry and grumpy," Millie explained. "And we can't find anything he wants to eat!"
Freddie hopped closer, his big eyes blinking. "Maybe… maybe we could build something to help us reach the berries on the tall bush near the waterfall! I saw them yesterday!"
Harry's eyes lit up. "Build something? What could we build?"
Millie started thinking. They needed something tall enough to reach the berries, but strong enough to hold Harry. She looked around. There were lots of bamboo stalks growing nearby. (Engineering and Materials Science!)
"We could build a tower!" she exclaimed. "Out of bamboo!"
Freddie and Harry looked doubtful. "A tower? Will it be strong enough?" Freddie asked.
"We can make it strong if we connect the bamboo stalks together using vines," Millie explained. "Like a puzzle! (Engineering and Geometry!)"
So, they started to gather bamboo stalks. Some were long, some were short, some were thick, and some were thin. They needed to choose the right ones. This was problem-solving in action!
"Let's use the thickest stalks for the bottom," Millie suggested. "They'll be stronger to hold everything up."
Harry, even though he was still a little grumpy, helped carry the heavy stalks. Freddie, being small and nimble, helped weave the vines around them. It was teamwork! (Collaboration!)
They worked and worked, and slowly, the tower started to grow taller and taller. But then… disaster struck! The tower started to wobble!
"It's going to fall over!" Freddie cried.
Millie looked worried. They needed to strengthen the tower. She thought about triangles. (Geometry!). She'd seen her dad Monkey use triangles to make strong bridges.
"We need to add some support!" she said. "We can use smaller bamboo stalks to make triangles in the corners. Triangles are super strong!"
They added the triangular supports, and the tower became much more stable. Now it stood tall and proud! (Engineering and Structural Design!)
Harry carefully climbed onto the tower. It wobbled a little, but it held! He stretched out his long neck and… Yippee! He reached the berries!
"Yum! These are the best berries ever!" Harry munched happily, his grumpiness melting away with each bite.
He shared the berries with Millie and Freddie, and they all laughed and celebrated their successful engineering feat.
But then… Harry felt a different kind of rumble in his tummy. It wasn't hunger. It was… something else. He looked at Millie and Freddie, who had helped him so much. He felt… grateful.
"Thank you, Millie and Freddie," he said softly. "You helped me when I was grumpy and hungry. You're the best friends a hippo could ask for."
Millie and Freddie smiled. "We're always here for you, Harry!"
Then, Harry did something unexpected. He gave Millie and Freddie the biggest, warmest hippo hug they had ever received. It was so big, it almost knocked them over! But they didn't mind. They knew that Harry's hungry howls were gone, replaced by happy hugs.
From that day on, Harry still got hungry sometimes. But now, he knew that when he felt that grumpiness coming on, he could ask for help, think creatively, and maybe even build a tower to reach his goals! And most importantly, he knew that having good friends was the best treat of all.
And whenever anyone asked how they reached the berries, they would say proudly - through 'Engineering, Math, Art, and Science!'
After the incident, Millie came up with an idea of painting the tower, and she painted it vibrantly! Harry also arranged for a new system of pulley system with the help of Freddie and Millie so that they don't have to build the tower again - making the entire endeavor more impactful, meaningful and educational. All through STEAM!
