The Whispering Loom and the Rainbow Alpaca
It was the coldest night ever in the mountain village. Snow swirled around, making tiny drifts against every door. Smoke curled gently from the chimneys, smelling like warm wood. Inside a small, cozy hut, Sofia, a Quechua girl with cheeks rosy from the cold, sat by her singing loom. She hummed a soft tune as her fingers danced, making beautiful patterns. Her little friend, Inti, an alpaca with a wool coat like a rainbow, munched on some sweet hay nearby. Sofia looked out the window at the falling snow and shivered. "Oh, Inti," she whispered, "the village is so cold tonight. How can we make everyone warm?" Inti, with a soft "Mmmph," seemed to nod. He knew Sofia wanted to help everyone feel snug. They needed a very special blanket, one big enough to cover all the houses and keep everyone toasty.
A Giant Blanket, One Thread at a Time
Sofia pulled out her biggest basket of wool. "We need so much, Inti!" she exclaimed, her breath puffing out white in the chilly air. Her loom sang as she began to weave. *Clack-clack-whoosh*, went the shuttles, as threads turned into cloth. Inti watched, his rainbow wool shimmering. He nudged a large bundle of yarn with his nose. Sofia worked and worked, her fingers flying. The blanket grew, slowly, slowly. It was getting big, bigger than her bed! But when she held it up, it was still too small for the whole village. She sighed, her rosy cheeks drooping a little. It felt like trying to catch all the snowflakes with a tiny cup.
Inti's Magical Wool and Pachamama's Whisper
Inti gently bumped Sofia's hand with his soft nose. He started to wiggle! With a little shimmy and a shake, strands of his beautiful rainbow wool started to float off him, swirling in the air like tiny, colorful clouds. Sofia gasped. Inti was spinning his own wool, without any tools! The wool floated onto Sofia's loom, ready to be woven. She worked quickly, her heart feeling warm. But still, the blanket needed to be even bigger! Just then, a gentle breeze, smelling like fresh earth, swirled into the hut. Sofia felt a soft touch on her hand. It was Pachamama, the earth spirit, who appeared as a kind woman woven from the hills themselves. Pachamama didn't speak with words, but with a gentle squeeze and a whisper that tickled Sofia's ear like rustling leaves, "Little weaver, use all your love. It will grow."
