A Dragon for the Sky
Red lanterns danced in the breeze. Big drums went *boom-boom-tap* by the river! It was the Dragon Boat Festival. Layla wore her shiny superhero cape. Layla had a super windy whistle power. She could blow gentle gusts of air! Layla held a huge dragon kite made of paper. She taped her happy drawings of boats and sweet peaches onto the dragon's belly. "The fluffy clouds need my pictures!" Layla cheered. She held a smooth pebble named Pip in her pocket. Pip was her lucky green stone. Layla wanted her kite to soar higher than every drum beat. She pulled the string tight. She wiggled her red sneakers and smiled. The paper dragon had big friendly eyes and wide paper wings. Layla ran across the grass toward the wooden dock.
The Wobbly Whirly Spin
*Whoosh!* Layla blew her magical breeze. The air spun like a tiny silver swirl. Up went the dragon kite! But *uh-oh*! The dragon kite did not fly straight. It wobbled left. It spun right! *Zzzzoop!* The dragon kite did silly loops in the sky. It tickled a weeping willow tree. Then it dove down fast. *Ker-plop!* The kite crashed right into a basket of squishy melons. Melon juice went *squirt* on the grass. Layla's shoulders drooped. Her super puff was too wild for the light paper. Mateo walked over from the river path. He wore his explorer vest and carried a brown satchel. Mateo hummed a jaunty tune, *hmm-dee-hum*. He looked at the melon on the kite nose. Mateo tapped his chin and opened his leather bag.
Pebbles and Gold Ribbons
"Let us fix the dragon together," Mateo said kindly. He hummed *buzz-buzz-hum* while he tied the golden ribbons to the kite tail. The ribbons fluttered like shiny noodles. Layla pulled two shiny river stones from her pocket. "Meet Shiny Sam and Dot," Layla giggled. She tied the heavy little stones under each wing tip. Now the dragon kite was balanced and strong! Mateo held the wooden spool. Layla aimed at the blue sky. She blew another soft superhero gust. *Fwoosh!* The kite leaped into the warm air. The golden ribbons danced like bright sunshine. The dragon climbed over the tall wooden docks. But a sudden sneeze from a boat horn went *HONK*! The kite jerked sideways toward the tall dragon boat mast. Its string snagged on a carved wooden dragon horn!
