Poppy loved the playground. The swings went so high! The slide was so fast! One sunny day, Poppy went to play. She wore her favorite red boots. She had yellow ribbons in her hair. Funny Fizz lived near the playground. Funny Fizz was a squirrel. He had a fluffy tail and bright eyes. Pop from the Garden also loved the playground garden. Pop was a friendly ladybug. Her spots were so shiny. She liked to munch on the green leaves. Sweet Giggles the bunny hopped by. She had long ears and a twitchy nose. Sweet Giggles loved to find flowers.
Poppy ran to the sandbox. She wanted to build a castle. She dug and dug with her little shovel. Suddenly, her shovel hit something hard. “Oh!” said Poppy. She pulled the shovel out. She used her hands to dig more. It was not a rock. It was not a toy. It was a small, blue box! Poppy blinked. The box had sparkly stars on it. What could be inside?
Funny Fizz peeked from a tree. He saw Poppy and the blue box. Pop from the Garden flew closer. She landed on Poppy's shoulder. Sweet Giggles hopped closer, too. “What is it?” asked Funny Fizz to Poppy. Poppy shrugged. “I don’t know!” she said. She tried to open the box. But it was stuck tight. “Maybe I can help,” said Funny Fizz. He jumped down from the tree. He tried to pull the lid with his paws. But the box would not open.
Pop from the Garden had an idea. “Let’s find something to help us open this box.” she said. “Good idea!” chirped Poppy. "I saw a big rock near the swings just now!" Poppy, Funny Fizz, and Pop from the Garden walked to the swings with Sweet Giggles bopping behind. Poppy found the rock. It was heavy. Poppy tried to lift it. It was too heavy for her. Even Funny Fizz could not lift it. Pop from the Garden said, “Maybe we can roll it?” They all pushed the rock together. Slowly, slowly, the rock rolled. They rolled it back to the sandbox.
Poppy put the blue box on the ground. Funny Fizz put the rock near the box. “Now what?” asked Sweet Giggles. Poppy tried to lift the rock. Still too heavy! Funny Fizz tried, too. But the rock didn't move. Pop from the Garden said, “We can’t lift it. But maybe we can use it to tap the box.” Poppy nodded. She carefully tapped the rock on the lid of the box. Tap, tap, tap. Nothing happened. Tap, tap, TAP! The lid popped open a little bit! “Yay!” cheered Sweet Giggles.
Poppy carefully opened the box all the way. Inside, there was a small, shiny key. The key was gold and glittery. “A key!” said Poppy. “What does it open?” Funny Fizz wondered. Pop from the Garden flew around Poppy’s head. “Maybe it opens a treasure chest!” she said. Sweet Giggles hopped with excitement. “Or a secret door!” she squealed.
Poppy held the key tightly. “Let’s find out!” she said. Where could there be a treasure chest or secret door? Poppy looked around the playground. She saw the slide. She saw the swings. She saw the climbing frame. Nothing looked like it needed a key. Funny Fizz scampered up the climbing frame. He looked all around. “Nothing here!” he called down.
Pop from the Garden flew to the slide. She looked under it. She looked behind it. “No lock here!” she announced. Sweet Giggles hopped to the swings. She looked at the chains. She looked at the seats. “No keyholes!” she said sadly. Poppy felt a little disappointed. Where could the key possibly be? What if it didn't open anything in the playground? Poppy sighed. Maybe it was just a pretend key.
Poppy looked at the ground. She saw a small wooden door. She had never noticed the wooden door before. It was at the bottom of the big oak tree. The oak tree shaded the sandbox. “Look!” Poppy exclaimed. She pointed at the little wooden door. Funny Fizz, Pop from the Garden, and Sweet Giggles all looked. “A door!” they said together. Poppy carefully brushed away the dirt from the door. She saw a tiny keyhole. Could it be?
Poppy put the gold key into the keyhole. It fit perfectly! She turned the key. Click! The little wooden door opened. Inside, there was a small, dark space. Poppy couldn't see anything. “What’s in there?” whispered Sweet Giggles. Poppy reached into the dark space. She felt something soft and fluffy. She pulled it out. It was a little stuffed bear! The bear had one button eye. It was wearing a tiny blue hat.
Poppy hugged the bear. It was so soft and cuddly! “A bear!” she said happily. Funny Fizz, Pop from the Garden, and Sweet Giggles looked at the bear. “It’s so cute!” said Pop from the Garden. Funny Fizz touched the bear’s hat. Sweet Giggles sniffed the bear’s fur. "He looks like he needs a friend," Sweet Giggles chimed.
Poppy realized something. Someone must have lost this bear. Maybe they were sad to lose it. Poppy decided to keep their new friend safe. “I will take care of him,” she said to her friends. She named him Barnaby. Poppy put Barnaby on the swing next to her. She pushed him gently. Barnaby seemed to be smiling.
From that day on, Poppy always brought Barnaby to the playground, Funny Fizz, Pop from the Garden, and Sweet Giggles were always there, too. They played together every day. The playground was even more fun with a new friend. Poppy learned that even the smallest key can open the biggest surprises. The end.
Poppy liked the playground the most because of the blue box with the shiny key, and her stuffed bear, Barnaby. Funny Fizz loved to play hide and seek, Pop from the Garden loved to swing higher than Funny Fizz, and Sweet Giggles was always laughing.
