Sunlight poured over the cracked brick walls. Years ago, fierce lightning shattered this very corner. Now, green vines climbed across tall tomato trellises. Diego gripped his shiny trowel, Excalibur, with fierce pride. His metal braces gleamed in the morning heat. Beside him stood Abuela Ada, his heroic grandmother. Her flowing cape fluttered with bright painted marigolds. Nearby, Atom stretched his tiny paws. The heroic hamster adjusted his acorn helmet with determination. Suddenly, Abuela Ada’s silver hearing aid buzzed sharply. A loud beep warned of approaching danger nearby. Atom dropped a heavy brick he carried easily. Deep rumbling echoed from beneath the dark garden soil. The earth shivered like a nervous puppy.
"The old villain's steel root-drainer!" Abuela Ada shouted. Years ago, her rival buried an iron machine here. Now, the dormant engine greedily sucked up groundwater. Fragile tomato leaves began wilting toward the dry dirt. High above, tiny bats fluttered inside their wooden box. If the soil dried, every seedling would perish. Abuela Ada raised her hands to summon wind. However, pure wind could not reach beneath the bedrock. Atom burrowed into the hole with lightning speed. The brave hamster pushed against the massive metal valve. Yet, the rusty gear refused to budge alone. Time was slipping away like loose dry sand. Diego’s chest tightened as his hopes started sinking.
Then Diego remembered the old shield behind them. A massive bench rested there, forged from battleship armor. The curved iron plate had saved many lives before. "We must lever the ancient valve!" Diego cried. Atom seized the heavy metal shield with super strength. Diego wedged his trusty trowel beneath the iron edge. Abuela Ada directed a steady gust under the rim. Together, the trio formed a living mechanical lever. Metal groaned loudly against stubborn stone and rust. With a thunderous pop, the wicked valve reversed direction. Cool, clean water surged upward like a joyous fountain. Droplets sprayed across the thirsty tomato vines instantly. Atom squeaked in victory from his muddy acorn helmet. Diego smiled broadly, metal braces shining in triumph. Their garden bloomed stronger than any ancient battle.
