The Sacred Request
Young Vamana, a Brahmin boy with eyes like polished obsidian and a smile that crinkled the corners of his face, approached the grand ritual ground. He wore a simple, unbleached cotton dhoti, tied with a sacred thread, and carried a small wooden staff that seemed almost an extension of his slender arm. Around him, the air thrummed with the deep resonance of chanting mantras, rising from priests gathered at fire altars built of meticulously placed bricks. Ceremonial parasols, embroidered with vibrant patterns of peacocks and lotus flowers, swayed gently above the chief priest, King Mahabali. The king, known for his boundless generosity, sat amidst offerings of fragrant jasmine and glowing ghee lamps. Vamana's voice, though soft, carried a peculiar weight as he bowed deeply. "O great King Mahabali, I seek but a modest boon from your boundless magnanimity." Mahabali, his ornate gold crown glinting in the firelight, gestured for the boy to speak. "I request," Vamana continued, his gaze unwavering, "three steps of land, measured by my own small feet, for my humble dwelling." A ripple of murmurs passed through the assembled courtiers, their expressions shifting between amusement and confusion at such a paltry request from the renowned king. The priests paused their rhythmic chanting, their eyes fixed on the young boy, curious about this unexpected interruption to the sacred rites.
The First Two Steps
King Mahabali, ever true to his word and despite the urgent whispers from his wise guru, Sukracharya, poured the sacred water into Vamana's cupped hands. The ritual was complete; the king had committed. A sudden, inexplicable tremor passed through the ground, rattling the silver bowls of offerings on the altars. Vamana, who moments before had been a small boy, began to expand. His simple cotton dhoti stretched, then disappeared as his form swelled, rising taller than the ceremonial parasols, then taller than the tallest palm trees surrounding the ritual ground. His feet, once small, now became colossal, shaking the earth with their immense size. Gasps erupted from the assembled crowd, quickly turning into shouts of awe and terror. With his first monumental step, Vamana's foot covered the entire earth, from the highest mountains to the deepest oceans, its shadow eclipsing the sun. The chanting of the priests ceased abruptly, their mouths agape, their eyes wide with disbelief as they witnessed the unfolding cosmic phenomenon. Then, with an even grander sweep, his second step stretched into the heavens, encompassing all the celestial realms, stars, and planets, leaving no corner of the sky untouched. The entire universe seemed to hold its breath.
