Alvin, a shepherd boy with a cheeky grin, loved to play tricks. He tended his sheep on a golden hillside farm, the sun warm on his bare feet. "WOLF! WOLF!" he shouted, his voice echoing across the fields. Sturdy farmers in straw hats dropped their tools in the distant village. They ran, huffing and puffing, to the golden hillside. "Where's the wolf, Alvin?" asked one, wiping his brow. Alvin giggled. "Just kidding!" The villagers grumbled and went back to their work.
A few days later, Alvin did it again. "WOLF! WOLF!" he yelled, even louder this time. The villagers, though a little slower, rushed back up the hill. "Alvin, not again!" cried another farmer. Alvin just shrugged, trying to hide his smile. "No wolf!" he chirped. The villagers shook their heads, their faces serious. "Alvin," one warned, "if you keep calling wolf when there isn't one, we won't listen." Alvin just watched them leave.
Then, one sunny afternoon, a real grey wolf, lean and silent, slinked through the tall wheat near Alvin's sheep. Its yellow eyes glinted. Alvin's heart thumped! "WOLF! WOLF!" he screamed, his voice trembling now. He pointed with a shaky finger. The sheep scattered. He looked towards the village, small dots in the distance. He yelled again, his throat sore. But no one came. The village roofs sat quietly under the sun. The farmers didn't even look up. Alvin knew he had to think fast to get the sheep to safety all by himself.
