A Mission in the Glen
Jamie pulled his red knit cap tight against the chill. A misty Highland glen with heather stretched wide before them. Nearby, a stone cottage was smoking with fragrant peat. Across the loch, a distant island castle reflected upon dark waters. Today was St. Andrew's Day, and time was quickly running out. Rusty the fox hopped onto the front saddle of their tandem bicycle. His bushy tail twitched with bright anticipation. In Jamie's leather satchel lay an important scroll tied with blue ribbon. The village had entrusted them to invite Argyle the dragon to dinner. If they did not reach the castle before sunset, the gates would lock tight. "Ready to pedal, Rusty?" Jamie asked, gripping the rubber handles. The fox yipped in agreement and dug his paws into the pedals. Together, they surged forward along the bumpy path. Suddenly, a strange rustling sound crackled from the purple heather.
The Broken Shore Road
A flock of black grouse burst upward with beating wings. Jamie swerved the tandem bike, narrowly dodging the fluttering feathers. Rusty pedaled furiously, his ginger fur bristling in the sharp wind. The dirt path sloped steeply downward toward the chilly loch. Mud splashed upward like brown paint, coating their spinning spokes. Jamie leaned hard into the curves to keep them steady. "Keep the rhythm going!" Jamie shouted over the rushing breeze. Rusty chattered rapidly, pumping his short legs with steady strength. Up ahead, the trail vanished into a sudden gap. Recent rains had washed out the old wooden footbridge completely. Deep water churned beneath the slick boulders below. Jamie searched frantically for a way to cross the gap. A fallen pine log stretched precariously between the two rocky banks.
Crossing the Chasm
Jamie did not hesitate as the shadows grew long and cool. He aligned the bicycle wheels directly with the fallen pine trunk. "Balance, Rusty! Do not look down!" Jamie called out firmly. The fox stiffened, holding the handlebars completely straight with his front paws. Rubber tires rolled onto the bark with a wet crunch. One slip meant splashing straight into the freezing loch water. Jamie kept their momentum moving forward with slow, even pedal strokes. Inch by inch, the tandem bicycle crossed the narrow wooden bridge. With a final jolt, both wheels landed safely on island stone. Looming above them stood the towering gates of the island castle. An enormous shadow suddenly dropped from the high battlements. Argyle the dragon landed with a thud that shook the stones. A curl of warm smoke drifted from the dragon's wide nostrils.
