The Urgent Summons
Rain hammered the emerald rice terraces. Distant temple bells chimed through heavy mist. On the muddy bank, Raj secured a leaf-wrapped bundle into Ananya's woven bamboo satchel. Across the churning monsoon river, the flooded village needed medicine before sundown. Today was World Health Day, yet floodwaters trapped the families on their hill. Raj's boat, carved from a single tree, could not withstand the surging rapids. "My vessel is too light," Raj shouted over the wind, adjusting herbs tucked beneath his turban. "Only sturdy feet can carry this healing parcel across." A sudden buzz sliced the damp air. Miraco darted downward, his goggles gleaming beneath his leather pilot's cap. A tiny notebook was strapped firmly across his thorax. He read wind currents like open roads. Ananya curled her trunk tightly around her ear's bright scarf. She bowed her head, ready to face the violent brown water.
Into the Swirling Current
The river gripped Ananya's legs like icy bands. Brown water pushed against her belly with fierce weight. Up ahead, Miraco zipped into a headwind, fluttering his iridescent wings rapidly. He scribbled notes with a tiny claw, tracking dangerous crosscurrents. "Steer left!" Miraco buzzed, darting above a sudden whirlpool. Ananya shifted her weight toward the rocky shallows. Her massive feet searched for stable stones beneath the mud. Crack! A splintered palm trunk shot through the spray without warning. It struck Ananya's side, tilting her balance. The bamboo satchel slipped along her shoulder. Ananya gasped and whipped her trunk out, catching the strap just above the foaming water. The healing herbs stayed dry, but the current dragged her sideways. Her hind legs slid off the submerged ridge. Miraco hovered inches from her eyes, pointing his front legs toward a cluster of stable boulders ahead.
The Crashing Surge
A terrace wall collapsed upstream with a deafening roar. A wave of churned clay and tangled roots surged forward. Ananya planted all four feet deep into the riverbed pebbles. Fear fluttered in her chest, but she squeezed her eyes shut and held her ground. Miraco caught a violent updraft, soaring high into the stinging rain. From above, his sharp eyes spotted a sunken stone pathway leading to the village landing. He swooped downward through the gale, buzzing in rhythmic loops. "Follow my shadow!" Miraco chirped bravely against the howling gale. Ananya trusted his signals completely. She moved step by step along the hidden stones, matching the dragonfly's swift flight path. The muddy wall slammed into her flank, spraying water across her back. Ananya braced her muscles, keeping the precious satchel hoisted high above the torrent with her trunk.
