चांदनी से भरे बगीचे में, चमेली की बेलें हवा में झूल रही थीं। संगमरमर का फव्वारा पानी की फुहार कर रहा था और लालटेनें इठला रही थीं। युवा बादशाह अकबर अपनी राजगद्दी पर बैठे थे, पर उनके माथे पर थोड़ी चिंता थी। "बीरबल," उन्होंने आह भरकर कहा, "मैंने राज्य के सभी ख़ज़ाने देख लिए हैं। हीरे, मोती, सोना... क्या इससे भी बढ़कर कुछ नहीं है?" यह एक बच्चों के लिए मनोरंजक साहसिक कहानी है, जो जिज्ञासा और सरलता की खोज करती है।
तेज़-तर्रार बीरबल मुस्कुराए। "जहाँपनाह, शायद सबसे बड़ा ख़ज़ाना आपकी आँखों के सामने ही हो, बस आप उसे देख नहीं पा रहे हैं।" अकबर की आँखें चमकीं। "सच में? कहाँ?" बीरबल ने संकेत किया। "मेरे पीछे आइए!" वे शाही गलियारों से होकर उस जगह पहुँचे, जहाँ एक पुराना, धूल भरा कमरा था। "क्या यह कोई नया कोड है, बीरबल?" अकबर फुसफुसाए, उत्सुकता से झूलती लालटेनों के बीच देखते हुए।
कमरे के बीच में एक बड़ा, लकड़ी का संदूक था। उस पर मकड़ी के जाले लगे थे। अकबर ने हिम्मत करके ढक्कन उठाया। अंदर, चमकते गहनों की जगह, रंगीन कागज़ों का ढेर था। बच्चों के चित्र! ऊँचे पहाड़ों के चित्र, हंसते हुए सूरज के चित्र, और यहाँ तक कि एक चित्र में एक बड़ा, प्यारा हाथी दिखाया गया था, जिसके पैर में चाँदी का कंगन था– ठीक अमर जैसा, महल का वफादार हाथी, जो अक्सर बच्चों की मदद के लिए रुकता था। अकबर की आँखें खुशी से भर गईं। "यह तो मेरा सबसे अच्छा ख़ज़ाना है!" उन्होंने खुशी से कहा। उन चित्रों में बच्चों की मासूमियत और खुशी कैद थी। अकबर के मन में खुशी की लहर दौड़ गई, जैसी किसी हीरे को देखकर भी नहीं आई होगी।
उन्होंने हर चित्र को ध्यान से देखा, हर रंग को महसूस किया। बीरबल मुस्कुराते रहे। उनके होंठों पर एक संतोषजनक मुस्कान थी। अकबर ने चित्रों को सावधानी से वापस संदूक में रखा। "हम इन चित्रों को सभी को दिखाएँगे," उन्होंने कहा। "यह दिखाता है कि सबसे कीमती चीज़ें हमेशा चमकती नहीं हैं, बल्कि वे हैं जो हमें मुस्कुराने पर मजबूर करती हैं।" अकबर ने जाना कि असली दौलत सोने-चांदी में नहीं, बल्कि उन छोटी-छोटी खुशियों में छिपी होती है जो हमें मुस्कान देती हैं। उन्होंने और बीरबल ने मिलकर उन चित्रों को एक नई जगह पर रखा, जहाँ हर कोई उन्हें देख सके। उस दिन से, अकबर ने हमेशा छोटी-छोटी खुशियों और दयालुता को सबसे बड़ा ख़ज़ाना माना।
